Why the Right Dash Camera Matters in an Investigation

In investigations, facts matter. Memories fade, witnesses can disagree and details that seem insignificant in the moment can become critical later. A quality dash camera can provide an objective record of what happened, creating a piece of evidence that can help establish a timeline, identify vehicles, document behavior and preserve details that may otherwise be lost.

However, not all dash cameras are created equal. The difference between a low-cost camera and a professional-grade system can be the difference between a blurry image and a readable license plate, or between a vague story and a documented event.

How Dash Cameras Work

Most modern dash cameras operate on a continuous recording loop. The camera records video to a removable memory card in short segments, often one to three minutes in length. When the memory card becomes full, the camera automatically overwrites the oldest footage with the newest footage.

This means your dash camera is always recording without requiring you to manually delete old files. When an event occurs, such as a sudden impact, hard braking, or manual activation by the user, many cameras will protect that specific video file so it is not overwritten.

Some models also include parking mode, allowing the camera to continue monitoring the vehicle while it is parked, often activating when it detects motion or an impact.

How GPS Works in a Dash Camera

One of the most valuable features for investigative purposes is built-in GPS.

GPS, which stands for Global Positioning System, is a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. At any given moment, a GPS-enabled device receives signals from multiple satellites. Each satellite continuously broadcasts information including its precise location and the exact time the signal was sent.

The dash camera's GPS receiver calculates how long it took for those signals to reach the vehicle. Since radio signals travel at the speed of light, the camera can determine its distance from multiple satellites. Using a process called trilateration, the GPS receiver compares those distances from several satellites to calculate the vehicle’s exact position on Earth.

By continuously updating its position multiple times per second, the dash camera can determine:

  • The exact location where footage was captured

  • The route the vehicle traveled

  • The direction of travel

  • The vehicle’s speed

  • The time associated with each recorded event

That information is often embedded directly into the video file as metadata or displayed during playback through the manufacturer’s software or app.

For investigators, this data adds another layer of verification. A video may show what happened, but GPS data can help answer additional questions:

Where did it happen? What route was taken? What time did the vehicle arrive? How fast was it moving?

Why We Chose the Garmin Dash Cam X110

At Zona Investigations, we chose the Garmin Dash Cam X110 because it provides the features that matter most during an investigation: reliable recording, clear video, accurate GPS information, and a simple process for accessing and sharing footage.

When a client needs information, the ability to quickly retrieve a video clip and provide not only the footage but also supporting data such as location and speed can make a significant difference.

The camera’s compact design also allows it to remain discreet while still continuously documenting events.

Quality Matters

A dash camera is only useful if it captures information clearly and reliably. A poor-quality camera may miss important details due to low resolution, poor night performance, limited dynamic range, or unreliable recording. An investigator may only have one opportunity to capture a key moment and there are no second chances when evidence is lost.

That is why we invest in equipment we trust.

A dash camera will never replace a complete investigation, but it can provide an unbiased record of events. Combined with professional investigative techniques, witness interviews, records research, and other evidence, a quality dash camera can become a powerful tool in uncovering the facts.

At Zona Investigations, we believe the smallest details often tell the biggest story. That is why we rely on tools like the Garmin Dash Cam X110...because when our clients need answers, every detail matters.
