Each satellite continuously broadcasts information including its precise location and the exact time the signal was sent.

The dash camera's GPS receiver calculates how long it took for those signals to reach the vehicle. Since radio signals travel at the speed of light, the camera can determine its distance from multiple satellites. Using a process called trilateration, the GPS receiver compares those distances from several satellites to calculate the vehicle’s exact position on Earth.

By continuously updating its position multiple times per second, the dash camera can determine:

• The route the vehicle traveled

• The direction of travel

• The vehicle’s speed

• The time associated with each recorded event

That information is often embedded directly into the video file as metadata or displayed during playback through the manufacturer’s software or app.

Where did it happen? What route was taken? What time did the vehicle arrive? How fast was it moving?
